Tony Ryan won the Julian Corbett essay prize for naval history in 1951, for his essay on the British expedition to Copenhagen in 1807. He was senior lecturer in naval history at the University of Liverpool for many years, and served several terms on the council of the Navy Records Society. He published a number of important articles in The Mariner’s Mirror, contributed essays to a number of collaborative volumes and festschrifts, and also co-wrote (with J S Bromley) the section on navies in volume 6 of the New Cambridge Modern History. He was Honorary Secretary (Publications) of the Navy Records Society 1973-80 and then General Editor 1981-93, a record of 20 years hard labour and love.
