The series of letters from the young RNVR surgeon to his parents continues with his description of the many examples of great individual bravery he witnessed, together with very matter-of-fact accounts of long hours he spent professionally involved. Irvine does not tell of the hard work he put in personally during off-duty periods to raise morale and entertain the men, but his extremely lucid and detailed accounts make wonderful reading, and complement any understanding the reader might have had of the whole debacle. He concludes with details of the final miraculous night-time evacuation of every last man from Suvla.
