Medals from the Armada Campaign

Posted by Roger Perkins, on September 21st, 2015

Abstract

The 197 naval captains rewarded by Queen Elizabeth after the defeat of the Spanish Armada wore exquisite hand chased miniatures by Nicholas Hilliard, showing an ark propelled by gusts of wind on the reverse of a portrait of the Queen.  A second medal issued in 1589, The Dangers Averted Medal, shows a tall strong bay tree unaffected by a bolt of lightning, with the legend translated as ‘not even dangers affect it’.  The Dutch medal issued on the same occasion reminds us that a Dutch fleet, completely unforeseen by the Spanish planners, blockaded Dunkirk, denying the Duke of Parma access to the Spanish Armada making its way up the Channel.
