The Battle of the Saintes Part 1: The Battle Plans

Posted by Robert Bellamy, on September 5th, 2013

Abstract

Hitherto-unpublished documents from the Massachusetts Historical Society (Boston, Massachusetts, U. S. A.) are reproduced in this article.  There is a draft map, partly annotated in the handwriting of Admiral Sir G. B. Rodney, commanding the British fleet during the battle (12 April, 1782), showing the rival squadrons and comments on the actions of various ships.  This draft map is in the same archival file as nine finished colour plans, the first three showing the partial action of 9 April, 1782, and the remaining six describing the Battle of the Saintes.
