The Māori grass skirt of HMS Ramillies: The Broomfield Tapes, Part 2.

Posted by Sam Willis, on May 21st, 2026

Abstract

Bill Broomfield, a former crew member of HMS Ramillies, recounts the story of a Maori grass skirt presented to the ship’s captain in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1940. The skirt, believed to bring good luck, was worn by the captain during battles, including the invasion of Madagascar and the D-Day landings. Despite numerous near misses, the ship and crew remained unscathed. After the war, the skirt disappeared, possibly lodged in a Donegal house at HMS Vernon. Broomfield and other crew members are still searching for the skirt, hoping to preserve its legacy.
