This post presents the third of several extracts from a narrative written by William Owen (circa 1735 – 1779). The journal is currently held by the University of Wales. The transcription is presented here by Andrew Constantine who owned the journal between 1994 and 2019. Part I dealt with Owen joining the navy in 1751; Part II with his voyage from Plymouth to Madagascar. This third extract follows Owen’s exploits on board HMS Tyger under the command of his fellow-Welshman and patron Captain Thomas Latham. We hear in this extract about the health of the sailors on board the Tyger and her sister ship on the voyage, HMS Cumberland, and we also hear details of how the ships were victualled for the voyage and also upon their arrival in Madagascar.
