The Wrecking of HMS Litchfield, 1758

Abstract

This post presents a short account from Captain Matthew Barton of the wrecking of HMS Litchfield in 1758. In January 1759 news first reached England that HMS Litchfield, a fourth rate ship of the line, had wrecked upon the notorious Barbary coast and that her remaining crew were castaway there, soon to become slaves of the emperor and held for ransom.
