This article discusses the production and history of an illustrated manuscript produced by Scilly-born T. F. (Thomas Frederick) Richards, an Engine Room Artificer rating and officier in the Royal Navy from 1897 until his retirement; he was 71 when he tried to get this manuscript published. Discussion covers the original source, “Ten Thousand Miles Away,” written and composed by prolific music-hall artist J.B. Geoghegan, the parody from the Scottish Student Songbook which T.F. Richards illustrated, and what in Richards’s naval career may have inspired the production of the songbook.
